The town’s most prosperous period was undoubtedly the 12th century. This is witnessed by the urban form of
the old town centre with many buildings, squares and alleyways that run along the river Arno, which was for
centuries a very busy waterway. Always a river mouthtown, it was already an important naval base in Roman
times, intensifying trade in the Mediterranean ever since the 11th century.
Pisa is also well known for one of the most prestigious training institutes in Europe: the Scuola Normale Superiore.
