San Gimignano, Siena, Pienza & Montepulciano
In our company it is now possible to visit one of the most suggestive areas of our beautiful Tuscany in just one day. A whole day to be divided between San Gimignano, Siena, Pienza and Montepulciano.
Dominated at the time by 72 imposing tower houses, 14 of which are still intact, San Gimignano is known as “the town of the thousand towers”. Owing to the trade development of the Via Francigena, crossed during the Middle Ages by thousands of pilgrims on their way to Rome, San Gimignano witnessed an economic and cultural revival due to the recovery of its agricultural and artisan origins. Here you will be able to discover a pot-pourri of fragrances and flavours to be savoured in a unique tour of the countless artistic and cultural treasures the town possesses.The trip continues to Siena in the charm of the architectural styles of the Cathedral and Palazzo Comunale (Municipal Building) in Piazza del Campo, the stage of the famous Palio race.
In the afternoon one of our brilliant and expert tour leaders will accompany you to Pienza and Montepulciano, the artistic and scenic jewels of the Val d’Orcia. Built according to the will of the Pope from whom it takes its name, Pope Pius II, Pienza is a singular example of architectural beauty, harmony and perfection. The many little alleyways with their suggestive names mostly overlook breathtaking scenery. The squares and historical buildings preserve the secrets of the art of Rossellino and traces of the noble papal power. This artistic and natural heritage is joined by taste and fragrance. In fact a Pienza tradition is that of the typical Pecorino (sheep’s milk cheese).
You will continue the tour going to Montepulciano, a town built along a narrow ridge of limestone, surrounded by an imposing city wall. The stateliness of the renaissance buildings and the elegant beauty of its churches intertwine with the ancient winemaking tradition of “Nobile di Montepulciano”, the town’s winemaking symbol and the delight of your palate to taste.
