Pompeii is unique in the world as it gives us the possibility to reconstruct the daily life of the inhabitants of a city that on a catastrophic way (the eruptios of the Vesivius) has immortalized. The love for architecture, gardens and frescoes can be seen in the homes of the Pompei citizens. The gardens were full of fountains, thanks to the possibility of use the running water. Mosaics completed the decoration inside the houses, from the most simple in terracotta, to black and white plugs with geometic forms.
The heart of the city life, commercial and political activities, the center of all the economical, and the classic meeting point, the "piazza" of Pompeii, was the Forum. On the Forum, surrounded by a double colonnade and bronze and marble statues, the main public buildings were located: the Basilica, the Comitium, the government seats, the Giove's temple. And many other temples that testify the religious culture. This is also proved by the many private altars, named larari, in the citizens' houses.
The most popular places of the city were the Thermae and were divided into male and female sections, included a calidarium (hot bath), tepidarium (warm bath) and frigidarium (cold bath), and other rooms were used for massages and aesthetic procedures. The body care was completed in the gymnasiums for sport activities.
The Market (Macellum) one could buy vegetables and meat. The building of Eumachia was the seat of the Fullones corporation (clothes factories), destinated to the sale of wool and clothing. Along Via dell'Abbondanza were located the thermapolia, what were wine bars, osterie and trattorie.
The big theater, used for classic shows, commedies por tragedies could accommodate up to 5000 spectators, while the small theater was used for musical and mime shows. The gladiator games took place at the great eliptical Anfitheater, it held a capacity of 12000 persons.
